Abstracts


Developing a mission control system for a small LEO satellite

The presentation will present the development process used by SunSpace for developing a complex and interactive software control system. The development, build and test environment will be discussed. A short overview of the current incarnation of the system will also be presented.


Software Testing and Quality Assurance at EMSS

EMSS is a software product company that provides a suite of high-value software applications. These products are used in the aerospace, automotive and defence industries, as well as by the major cellular operators. The talk will give an overview of the testing and quality assurance processes that are being applied for two different products. It will discuss how to make quality assurance work well within an Agile development process, as well as the trade-offs that had to be made within a commercial environment.

Speaker Profiles

Jacobus van Zyl

Jacobus van Zyl received his M.Sc. (Comp. Sci.) from Stellenbosch University in 2001. He then accepted an academic position at the International University in Germany where he researched intelligent environments and fuzzy rule learning. In 2005 he joined Sun Space and Information Systems where he participated in the development of satellite ground support and flight software. In 2007 he received the degree doctor of natural sciences from the University of Mannheim with highest distinction. Since January 2008 he has been head of software development at SunSpace, and is currently heading the development of SunSpace’s mission control system for South Africa’s Sumbandila satellite.

Jaco van der Merwe

Jaco has over 20 years of experience in the management of software teams, product development, design and programming. He has over 7 years of experience in establishing and managing agile software development and software quality assurance systems and processes. He has successfully managed the development of 7 large and complex software systems and products. He is currently the Head of Software Engineering at EMSS.
